Finding channel categories in IBO Player on a Samsung smart TV

First published · Reading time: 7 min to read

You open IBO Player on your Samsung smart TV, the channel list fills the screen, and you have no quick sense of where sport ends and entertainment begins. The categories are there — they just sit one step to the left of where most people are looking.

This guide explains how the group structure works, how to move between categories with the remote, and what to try when the list loads partially or a group you expected is missing.

Frequently asked questions

Why does pressing the left arrow do nothing on the channel list?

The left arrow opens the group panel only when the channel list itself has focus. If a channel is already playing, press the back button to return to the list view first, then press left.

Can I reorder or rename the groups in IBO Player?

The groups that come with the channel package cannot be renamed or reordered inside the app. What you can do is build a favourites group, add channels to it in whatever order suits you, and use that as your primary list — it sits at the top of the panel so it is always the first entry.

My favourites group has disappeared after an app update. Is there a way to restore it?

Favourites are saved locally on the TV rather than in the cloud. A major app update or a factory reset of the television can clear that local data, and there is no automatic backup. You would need to re-add the channels by hand.

Is there a way to find a specific channel without going through the categories?

Yes. From the main channel screen, press the search button on the Samsung remote or select the search icon in the app. Type part of the channel name and IBO Player returns matches from across all groups at once.

Does the device key shown in IBO Player stay the same after a factory reset?

The MAC address is part of the TV's network hardware and does not change. The device key displayed inside IBO Player can change after a factory reset, so if the app requests reactivation, note the new key and pass it to support when you get in touch.

How IBO Player groups its channels

Rather than presenting every channel in one continuous scroll, IBO Player sorts them into named groups — sport, news, entertainment, children's, and so on. The exact names depend on the package you have, but the layout inside the app follows the same pattern regardless.

The channel list you see when the app opens belongs to whichever group was selected last. If that group is large, the list can feel endless. The fix is to move sideways rather than scrolling down: press the left arrow on the Samsung remote while the channel list is in focus, and a narrower group panel slides in from the left side of the screen. Each row in that panel is a category. Highlight one, press the centre of the directional pad, and the channel list on the right immediately shows only what belongs to that group.

That left-arrow shortcut is the single most useful thing to know. Many viewers spend weeks scrolling through one enormous list without realising the sidebar exists.

Moving through the group panel without pressing the arrow repeatedly

If you have a long list of groups, pressing the up and down arrows to step through them one at a time is tedious. While the group panel has focus, pressing the Menu button — the button marked with three horizontal lines on most Samsung remotes — brings up a filter field at the top of the panel. Type the first letter or two of the group name and the panel narrows to matching entries.

Speaking is often quicker than typing on a TV keyboard. Hold the microphone button on the Samsung remote, say the group name, and the filter field fills in straight away.

IBO Player also remembers which group was active when you last closed the app, so if you left with sport selected it will return there next time. For the channels you come back to most, though, a favourites list is more dependable than relying on that memory — particularly if other people in the household use the same television and change the active group.

Building a favourites list to avoid categories altogether

Categories take a large list and make it medium-sized. A favourites group takes it down to just the channels you actually use.

To add a channel to favourites, highlight it in the channel list and long-press the OK button. A context menu appears with an option to add it to your favourites. After you do this for a handful of channels, a favourites group appears at the top of the group panel — it is always the first thing you reach when you open the sidebar.

The same habit of building a short personal list works across other apps and devices too. The step-by-step guide to creating a short channel shortlist in IPTV Smarters Pro walks through comparable steps on an iPad, and the logic carries over directly.

For sport channels in particular, a well-kept favourites list makes a noticeable difference. The guide to organising Six Nations rugby channels using categories, favourites and search goes deeper into the same techniques and is worth reading alongside this one.

When the group panel loads incomplete or channels appear greyed out

If the group panel opens with fewer categories than you expect, or channels inside a group are greyed out and will not play, the most likely cause is a slow or interrupted connection at the moment the app started. IBO Player pulls the full channel list from the network each time it launches. A patchy signal during that initial load can produce a partial list.

Fully close the app — on a Samsung TV, press and hold the back button until the app closes, or use the task manager — wait a moment, then reopen it. With a stable connection, the complete group list loads cleanly.

If the problem appears repeatedly in the evening rather than at random, congestion on the home network is worth considering before assuming anything is wrong with the subscription itself. The household guide to buffering in the evening explains what drives that pattern and what changes actually help.

One more thing: IBO Player updates through the Samsung app store separately from the TV's own firmware. Open the app store, search for IBO Player, and look at the app's detail page — if an update is available, install it. Older versions sometimes mishandle the group panel in ways that a newer build corrects.

Registering your Samsung TV with the service

IBO Player links your subscription to a specific television using two codes: a MAC address and a device key. Both are shown on the app's activation screen before you enter any credentials. You do not create a username for the app — the subscription is attached to those two codes instead, which means it is bound to that physical TV.

After subscribing through Premium IPTV UK, the credentials you need arrive by email within a short time. The email specifies exactly what goes where. Once you enter the details, the full channel list appears along with all its categories — there is nothing else to configure on the TV.

If a group appears empty immediately after activation, close and reopen the app. The complete category structure sometimes needs a second load cycle to populate, particularly if the first connection was slower than usual.
